Technology in the Narutoverse

Power lines and trains, but no guns. Computers and fancy radio headsets but no heavy industry. Rubber, chocolate and coffee but no hint of long-distance trade. What the heck is going on here?

Well, the real reason the tech in Naruto makes no sense is that Kishimoto just throws in whatever looks cool or helps the plot along, without even pretending to try to make it consistent. But my stories focus too much on realism and internal consistency for that, so I'll just have to come up with some semi-plausible explanation.

Unfortuantely the standard post-apocalyptic scenario is totally unworkable. There are dozens of episodes where we see computers, headset radios and other devices that simply can't be manufactured without a full-blown 20th-century industrial civilization, and are too delicate to still be working more than a few decades after a general collapse. At the same time guns - one of the most rugged, useful and easily maintained examples of modern technology - are completely nonexistent.

Explanations that involve a limited development of technology fall prey to the same problem - strictly regulated cottage industries could provide small-scale electricity or a few steam-powered railroads, but not any kind of modern-looking electronics. You just can't build a fab without tens of billions of dollars worth of other industry.

So after much thought, I've decided to go with an idea Perfect Lionheart came up with a while back: they summon it. Specifically, the Elemental Countries have a little bit of small-scale industry, strictly regulated by their feudal lords, but the really advanced stuff is all summoned from other worlds. This makes summoned tech rare and expensive, since summoners aren't common and their control over what they summon isn't especially precise, but it also means you could run into a single example of just about anything.

This works pretty well both for explaining Kishimoto's crazy tech and for supporting interesting plot ideas. Guns are unheard of because the summoners are mostly ninja who aren't interested in undermining their own way of life, and the things are mostly only good for letting ordinary people kill genin (let's face it, anyone who can survive being blown through a concrete wall isn't going to be fazed by bullets either). Cars and planes are too big to easily summon, and aren't worth much without a lot of local industry that doesn't exist. But there's a lot of advanced engineering knowledge available studying from summoned books and machines, so anyone with money to burn can fund impressive one-off engineering projects

No, it isn't perfect. But it'll work well enough to hang a story on.

  1. That makes sense to a degree, but brings up all kinds of questions about where the tech is summoned from. The technology we have seen so far is almost exclusively current real world style stuff.

If it came from all over the multiverse you would expect occasional usefull examples of steam punk or sci-fi tech to pop up in places, not to mention artifacts from worlds where Napoleon/the South/Hitler/the Martians won the war.

Perhaps this could be explained by saying that summoning can only access a specific time and place that is very much like the real world.

The only other good alternative I have seen in fanfics is to claim that all the electronics only look like electronics, but instead use seals and chackra to work.

  2. Good points. Yes, I'd have to say that the summoners are only pulling from places that strongly resemble the real world, at least as far as what kinds of tech they have. I think I'd have to say that the ulta-tech stuff they show in some of the movies is actually chakra and seals, because if they could summon from a world that has force fields and powered armor the elemental countries would be a very different place.

  3. I'm not so sure, Loki. We assume that the tech we see in things like the first Naruto Movie are ninja based, but the Snow Ninjas are running around in what looks like local-made power armor. It seems to me that the issue would be reliability, as power armor in most universes is shown to break down fairly quickly with out constant maintenance and power supplies. It's possible that while the super-tech is chakra and seal based, it's been reveres engineered from hightech summoning.

  4. we do actually see a gun once in the manga, sitting behind a shop counter in the wave village when Sakura is walking around.

  5. It seems a bit of a stretch to say that ninja are immune to bullets, though. Even S-Rank ninja still bother to dodge or deflect shuriken and kunai, and we're given no reason to suspect those are anything but physics-obeying, fast-moving pieces of sharp metal. Bullets move a lot faster than any shuriken conceivably could, not because I think there's any sort of upper limit on ninja arm-strength, but because it would be rather obvious if thrown kunai regularly broke the sound barrier. They'd do a lot more damage to the tree trunk or wall they eventually hit after missing, for instance.

  6. Another idea tying into the bit about only summoning from one world: Have it that the original summmoning used that brought in the foreign tech was an accident! Further investigation showed that they *could* try to summon from other realities, but that there's also a chance it'd pull in something that would destroy everything as soon as it was attempted. Sorta like trying to pull a number from a set that doesn't exist and getting back an explosive Null value.

  7. You know I kind of assumed that they didn't need to develop guns. Gunpowder originally came about as an (un)happy accident from a guy in china. But in world where you can make explosions from paper and throw fireballs at people why would you bother? Guns themselves only came in to widespread use because they were cheaper and easier to train on than any other weapon. It's not until the mid 19th century that guns become the only weapon worth a damn. This is especially true give the range limits on most early guns. Sometimes tech just develops along different lines and there's no rule saying that a technology has to be developed to allow others.

  9. I would like to point out that the existence of raiton elemental manipulation could in fact result in a rapid increase in electronic technologies. The ability to create and control electricity with chakra would have made it relatively simple to develop basic electronic equipment. From there the developing wealth of the elementary countries could have funded research into more advanced forms of such technologies. The development of new ways of obtaining electricity (say oil power plants perhaps) could have fueled the developments of other industries (like plastics and rubber). The result being a highly advanced electronic culture without gunpowder. As for industrial development, since it is founded on ninja skills they may even use ninja skill to produce such products. Thereby taking away the need for huge billowing smokestacks that are such a common sign of technological development in our world. By the way the Sept. 6, 2009 comment is correct there is a gun displayed in a merchants shop during the wave mission. The reason why they are not widespread may simply be that they are to early in the developing stage to be reliable.

  10. The field of education is constantly changing and growing with technology. In this digital era, children grow up with computers from the time they are very young. In order to reach these children, educators need to adapt to technology in education and learn how to teach students using technological tools. mobile tracker free

  14. Gaming pc’s aren’t as difficult as you may perhaps think, and creating your very own gaming pc is not as tricky as a whole lot of folks would make you consider. Because you by now have a distinct software in head when constructing your individual gaming machine, there are actually only three main elements you have to have to worry about, and every little thing else is truly secondary: the processor, video clip card, and RAM. 스포츠토토

  16. Have you noted that when you go and read the news online, and read through the various stories from the syndicated websites that they usually have a technology section, and that technology section is filled with the latest gadgets, social networking methods, and any of the newest things coming from Silicon Valley? I have, and as a lover of technology, and coordinator for a think tank, I am disturbed by all this. Now then let me explain what I mean. free xmind comparison
